EVO4.2 Bookshelf Speakers

Wharfedale’s new EVO4 has grown out of the extensive research and development that produced the ELYSIAN flagship loudspeakers and borrows much of the technology involved in ELYSIAN.

The primary focus is on the AMT development resulting in a radically different way of reproducing high frequency detail efficiently and accurately. Similar cabinet technology to ELYSIAN provides a stable and solid foundation for the drive units with radiused edges to help integrate the driver output with the room acoustics. In addition the unique SLPP bass reflex system, as developed for ELYSIAN, is now incorporated in EVO4.

Britain's most famous loudspeakers

The EVO4 represents the dawn of a new standard in hi-fi, from Wharfedale – the most famous name in British loudspeakers.

Following the concept of the best-selling EVO series before it, EVO4 fuses the EVO concept with trickle-down technology from the flagship Wharfedale ELYSIAN series – pushing the boundaries of performance within its price class.

Evolution by design

Taking strong elements from the flagship ELYSIAN series, EVO4 has groundbreaking research and design embedded in its DNA. A long history of class-leading speaker concepts coupled with new technological breakthroughs means this is genuinely an evolution of affordable Hi-Fi.

AMT — Air Motion Transformer

The Wharfedale EVO4 series employs a specially engineered AMT (Air Motion Transformer) transducer for silky-smooth high-frequency reproduction. By design, the AMT moves a higher volume of air than a conventional soft-dome tweeter, offering improved point-source HF reproduction with lower distortion — evident in the sheer clarity of every EVO4 loudspeaker.

Accuracy

Articulate and accurate bass is perfected by the bi-directional weaved Kevlar cones – a material that is naturally self-damping, reducing and distributing resonances to virtually negligible levels. A fixed, profiled phase plug ensures smooth acoustic roll-off, further aiding integration with the AMT and mid-range drivers found in the EVO4.2 upwards.

Finely tuned

As per the uncompromising standard of Wharfedale loudspeaker development, hundreds of hours of listening plus custom-designed Wharfedale Computer Aided Optimisation technology allow for the fine-tuning of the crossover — perfecting the driver combination for ultimate performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size room suits the EVO4.2?

The EVO4.2 is a 3-way bookshelf speaker designed for small to medium rooms — roughly 10–25 m². Mount it on dedicated stands (around 60–70 cm so the tweeter sits near ear height) or a solid shelf, 20–40 cm clear of the rear wall to keep the bass tight.

What amplifier should I pair with the EVO4.2?

The EVO4.2 presents a nominal 8Ω load and 87dB sensitivity, and Wharfedale recommends roughly 25-120W per channel. A quality integrated amplifier or AV receiver in that range drives it cleanly without strain — aim for clean, stable power rather than maximum wattage.

Does the EVO4.2 need a subwoofer?

The EVO4.2 reaches down to about 54 Hz, so it delivers full, satisfying bass for everyday music listening on its own. For movies, or if you want chest-thumping low end in a larger room, add a Wharfedale subwoofer.

Is the EVO4.2 the top model in its range?

The EVO4.2 is the flagship bookshelf model in its series, with the largest drivers and the most output. Step down to the smaller models in the same series if you have a more compact room or want to save a little.

What finishes does the EVO4.2 come in?

The EVO4.2 is available in Black, White Oak and Walnut. All finishes are the same speaker acoustically — choose whichever best suits your room. Every option is in stock with free Australian shipping.
