The Crystal 4 series was engineered for excitement, and the CR4.3 floorstander is where that shows most clearly. It is a three-way design carrying two 165mm polypropylene bass cones and a 25mm soft dome tweeter, good for 50Hz to 20kHz and happy on anything from 25 to 120 watts.

Inside, a trapezoidal cabinet structure breaks up the standing waves that blur low-mid detail. The result is a front pair that carries music and dialogue on its own rather than leaning on the subwoofer for body.

The centre speaker is the one that does the most work in any home cinema system, carrying roughly eighty per cent of the dialogue. The CR4.C is voiced for an immediate, in-the-room sound with a natural balance, and its soft dome tweeter disperses widely so everyone on the sofa hears the same rich sound field, not just the person sitting dead centre.

The WH-D10 active subwoofer runs a 250mm composite fibre cone on 150 watts, peaking at 300, and reaches down to 30Hz. It adds weight to soundtracks and scale to music without drawing attention to itself, tuned to hand over cleanly to the floorstanders rather than compete with them, so low frequencies stay tight and tuneful at volume.

The CR4.1 surrounds and the CR4.C centre both use woven Kevlar cones, a material Wharfedale reaches for in its leading products because it is light, stiff and strong, and all four speakers share a 25mm dome tweeter.
