D320 Bookshelf Speakers

In the early 1980s, Wharfedale created the blueprint for modern ‘budget’ hi-fi speakers. Almost four decades on, Wharfedale again redefines the low-cost, high-performance speaker concept with the all-new range, the D300 Series.

Running concurrently with the existing Diamond 11 Seblack finishries, attaining even lower price points, the D300 series has modishly styled enclosures incorporate many similar technologies, re-designed and engineered specifically for this new range. The drive units and bass reflex system are especially noteworthy – no other speaker range delivers such high specifications at such low prices.

Overview

Punching far above their weight

Wharfedale and a team of esteemed specialists have created a range of 'budget' speakers that punch far above their weight. Despite their compact size, the soundstage is substantial and engaging, with expressive midrange transitioning seamlessly into fluid high-frequency detail. The bass reaches surprising depths yet stays lucid, accurate and controlled — from rock and electronica to classical and jazz, the D300 Series delivers captivating sound.

The D300 Series uses the latest generation of Wharfedale's woven Kevlar cones bonded to a super-lightweight rubber surround, delivering remarkable clarity, texture and musical expression. A super-long-throw voice-coil motor system enables exceptional low-frequency linearity, while oversized ceramic magnets — a technology Wharfedale pioneered in the 1960s — ensure high sensitivity and absolute control of cone movement.

Crossover and cabinet design

The drive units are combined by a crossover developed with Wharfedale's Advanced Software and Listening Iteration system, using low-loss polypropylene capacitors and laminated-core inductors. The acoustically profiled cabinets feature 28mm-thick front baffles, critical panel bracing and a specially developed internal fibre lining — so the listener hears the drivers unsullied by panel vibration or internal resonance.

P-EQ bass reflex port

P-EQ bass reflex port

Developed from the Slot-Loaded Distributed Port of the Diamond 11 Series, the D300's P-EQ (Pressure Equalisation) port fires downward through precisely curved openings into the room, reducing the pressure differential that causes turbulence and 'chuffing' in conventional ports. The result is natural, deep, controlled bass — and the freedom to position the speakers closer to a rear wall.

Collaborate to innovate

Wharfedale called upon well-known specialists — responsible for many award-winning designs at sister companies Mission and Quad — to develop the D300 Series. Acoustic performance was managed by Peter Comeau, Wharfedale's Director of Acoustic Design and one of Britain's foremost loudspeaker designers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size room suits the D320?

The D320 is a compact bookshelf speaker designed for small to medium rooms — roughly 10–25 m². Mount it on dedicated stands (around 60–70 cm so the tweeter sits near ear height) or a solid shelf, 20–40 cm clear of the rear wall to keep the bass tight.

What amplifier should I pair with the D320?

The D320 presents a nominal 4Ω load and 87dB sensitivity, and Wharfedale recommends roughly 25 - 100W per channel. A quality integrated amplifier or AV receiver in that range drives it cleanly without strain — aim for clean, stable power rather than maximum wattage.

Does the D320 need a subwoofer?

The D320 reaches down to about 56 Hz, so it delivers full, satisfying bass for everyday music listening on its own. For movies, or if you want chest-thumping low end in a larger room, add a Wharfedale subwoofer.

Is the D320 the top model in its range?

The D320 is the flagship bookshelf model in its series, with the largest drivers and the most output. Step down to the smaller models in the same series if you have a more compact room or want to save a little.

What finishes does the D320 come in?

The D320 is available in Black, Rosewood, Walnut and White. All finishes are the same speaker acoustically — choose whichever best suits your room. Every option is in stock with free Australian shipping.
